浅说纽卡球员欧文

There were those insisting earlier this season that Michael Owen was a spent force at this level. Reason? His pace had deserted him on the back of an horrendous string of injuries and it was the fleetness of his feet which had always set him apart from the rest.

A return of two goals in his first 15 Premier League games this season seemed to endorse that view and certainly, at the Stadium of Light in November, he looked a shadow of his former self.

 His star has risen though since the arrival of Kevin Keegan and a changed approach from the manager, who has started playing him behind Obafemi Martins and Mark Viduka in a three-man attack.

Owen's tally in a struggling side is now a far more respectable eight goals in 25 appearances, with four in his last five outings.

And the question now is will the club be able to hang on to the 28-year-old this summer now that his stock is on the rise again?

 Lest we forget, his goal record remains phenomenal – 40 goals in 88 international appearances and closing in on Gary Lineker and Bobby Charlton at the top of the list, although new England boss Fabio Capello's preferred one-striker formation threatens to keep Owen in the cold, with Wayne Rooney the Italian's No.1 choice so far.

At Real Madrid, he scored 13 goals in 20 games; at Liverpool, 118 times in 193 appearances.

 Even at Newcastle his return has been an excellent 15 goals in 33 league appearances – it's just that those 33 games have been spread over three seasons since his £16million transfer from Real Madrid.

 Now he's showing signs of still having some petrol in the tank, though, it will be intriguing to see what interest there is in the summer in the England striker.

And whether Keegan chooses to, or is capable of, hanging on to a player who has not been renowned previously for his love of Tyneside.
